Nissan X-Trail 2.2 DCi 2006 - Loss of power under load - Fixed #

Hi Guys. Need some assistance with this one.
Vehicle presented with a loss of power under load at around 3800 - 4500rpm. Only when you plant the accelerator. If you back off and gradually feed in the power it's possible to drive the engine to its rev limit. It only seems to do it when it's warmed up and it's very hard to get it to do it in 1st. Oh and NO DTC's logged!
Looking at live data when the vehicle faults, the rail pressure drops from 1800b at 3850rpm to around 100 - 120b. Obviously far to low! The MAF voltage is steady at 4.19v while it's losing power. While I was testing, the ECU did flag a DTC for Rail Pressure relief valve but after a few minutes it cleared and hasn't come back. I can't see anything else obvious on Live Data. The injector duration stays constant, the Manifold pressure drops from 236kpa to around 200 and the Baro pressure fluctuates from .997 to .991 while it's faulting (but I can't see 6 millibars making any difference).
After making some enquiries and taking some advice from a local diesel specialist I decided to replace the fuel pump as the Denso units fitted to these motors apparently do fail with this type of symptom. Not a job for the faint hearted, I can tell you!!
Needless to say, the pump has NOT cured the problem! Now I've really got to fix it. Even though I advised the owner I couldn't 100% guarantee my diagnosis due to the intermittant nature of the fault I've still Spent £475+ VAT on a pump!!!
I've tried in turn disconnecting the MAF sensor, the EGR valve and even clamped the fuel return pipe from the pressure relief valve on the common rail, figuring that if the valve is releasing the fuel pressure it will blow the pipe off under pressure (but it didn't).
I'm now running out of ideas! Any suggestions (or silver bullets) would be very welcome!!
Thanks for reading this incredibly long post!!
Cheers - Paul.

Hi Paul. I only got involved with one of these with a starting problem which we cured by reconditioning the starter motor and eventually applying copaslip to the ringear. ( this car had been at the dealers for months without a fix ).
We then found out that it also lacked power and we couldn't see an obvious reason and were were advised by the dealer to take it to or have a word with Feather Diesels as they did all the warranty work for Nissan UK. ??? All they could tell me is that they Cannot test injectors or pumps but if they thought that they were faulty, they would replace them but they sell reconditioned parts More expensive than Main dealer parts.
The Vehicle belonged to a trader so it went away lacking power,
Tony.

Paul
I did a bit of research on one of these that I was having issues on (2002 model ) apparently if the IMV / suction valve is replaced it needs adapting / calibrating on the dealer tool. If you have changed the whole pump, including the valve I would think this would apply.
Would not expect symptoms to be exactly the same.
Cheers Aidan

Hello, As above if its been a IMV/pump issue the pump adaptions will need reseting. just back to the basics have you changed the fuel filter? quite common for bocking with similar symtoms as yours. best regards john

Hi.
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply Guys.
The first thing I did was change the filter for a genuine one even though the 'old' one was only 3 or 4 months old (but a pretty non-descript brand). The fault does feel like fuel starvation.
I'll make enquiries about getting the pump adapted to the ECU. I hope that's all it is!! Does that mean that it might only have needed adapting in the first place?
If anyone else has any thoughts I'd be interested to hear them. I'll post any developments.

Hi Paul. what's your rail prassure at idle? should be about 260 to 300 bar, if your pressure is higher than this at hot idle then you will need to get addaptions reset. cheers

does sound like fuel starvation like already said , is there a electric pump in the tank ? if not how about supplying your own diesel feed to the fuel filter , keep your container high so gravity is helping out somewhat , it rules out any restrictions in the lines and blockages in pick up pipe in the tank.

Paul
Does any-one at UKAT who is local to you have Consult 3 ?

Hi.
I don't think it's got a lift pump in the tank as it's got a primer on the filter housing.
Fuel pressure at idle is about 280b. I'm not sure whether it's different when cold but I'll check.
I take it that Consult 3 is the Nissan Dealer level diagnostic gear? I do know someone who specialises in dealer level gear for most makes but I live in Rotherham and the X-Trail's in Barnsley. If anyone reading this has this gear locally I'd be interested to hear from you. (07769 706110)Ne te confundant illegitimi

Hi.
Well, had it to the dealers who've re-set all the adaptions and, guess what? No different! They didn't have any intelligent ideas either.
I've run out of ideas now!
BTW - new fuel rail from dealers over £600!!! I hope to God it's not that!
Following another line of enquiry now but still looking for some devine inspiration!
Will post any developments.

Well, after having the vehicle for a week the Dealers have cured the fault - with another new filter!!
I don't know what diagnostic procedure led them to this but it's cured and, best of all they couldn't charge me because they supplied the filter I've just fitted to it!!
what a nightmare! We're now persuing Nissan for a contribution towards the pump!
