Citroen C2 1.4 HDi 8HX 2003 - Intermittent power loss / cutting out #
Posted by Paul Howd on August 17, 2010, 2:30 pm
Year of Manufacture *: 2003 Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 8HX (I think) ( Optional ) Scanner Used: launch/multiscan ( Optional) Fault Codes: P0402 P1164 P0337
As above.
When I saw it this morning it was a non-starter (The power loss/cutting out has been going on for some time but typically it restarts easily. After cutting out the EPS sometimes takes a while to come back too, but this is apparently the first time it has done a persistent non-start.
Had another look at it this morning. but, as before, started first turn for me so unable to do any active tests. P1164 and P0337 returned.
Was about to replace Crank sensor on grounds that its not expensive and CPS faults are noted in the autodata TSB section only to find that it is not particularly straight forward since the crank pulley needs to be removed.
Now, before I do this would anybody know if the crank sprocket is "Keyed"? Increasing numbers of vehicles these days seem to have keyless pulleys meaning that the belt timing is lost if the central bolt is undone unless timing locking tools are used.Autodata is not clear on this one and though (since it has the sensor wheel on it) I would have thought that it would be it would be nice to know for sure.
Would anybody know what the case is with this one before I try to find out the hard way!

Paul the belt sprocket is keyed but dont windy gun the crank pully bolt off , there is a hole to lock the crank where the exhaust goes under the sump , just put an m8 bolt in to lock it
Never had any issues with DV4 crank sensors mind , wiggle connector with engine running but i wouldnt hold much hope
Egr on these are a standard vac operated diaphragm so and the crank sensor code is likely to have been flagged due to it cutting out . I dont have any experience with the scanner you have but if you can see fuel pressure actual over desired then give it a good road test and look at the figures Other things ive had is wiring to rail sensor chaffing in the hard conduit , try flexing the harness from ecu to FPS , its not a long section

Cant really see how an EGR issue might cause a non-start situation .
In any case, the "EGR" fault code did not recur on the subsiquent non-start so I would tend to regard it as a red herring (For now anyway)
The possible CPS issue is reported in "Autodata" TSB section.
On another note. What a sod the polly v belt is on this!
There doesnt seem to be any way of locking the tensioner in "service mode" IYSWIM and the only bit you can get hold of to release the tension is sort of 14.5 mm so a 15mm spanner will eventually snap the "corner" off and no longer grip properly!
