Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 2002 - Misfire and smoking, code P2338 #

Engine Code or CC *: FMBA 130PS
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Solus Pro

Hi All
Had the above vehicle in a few days ago the problem being poor starting, diesel knock and lots of white smoke. First I checked for a misfuel but all OK. Did a code read and got (P2338) Cylinder 3 Above Knock Threshold. Recoded No3 injector, no joy. Recoded all four injectors, still no joy. Took No3 injector to be tested and was told it was fine. When I refitted the injector I swapped it over with No2 to see if the fault moved to cylinder 2. I recoded the injectors to the correct cylinders but I,m still getting (P2338) code.
The odd thing is its as if the code wont clear. If I deliberately get other codes up by disconnecting various sensors they clear immediately but (P2338) remains without even starting the engine.
I.ve checked fuel rail pressure (1400Bar) and injector resistance (0.21 Ohms) on all four.
The only reading I,m not to sure about is the voltage at the injector harness. According to the tests section of my Vantage Pro I should have (5.00 Volts) with the harness disconected but I,m only getting (2.46 Volts) on each injector. I only got the scope last week so expert I aint!

I think you will find cylinder 3 is injector 4

Mark , as Kevin mentioned cyl3 is inj 4 , there is loads of posts on this subject .
Regards injector fault , had one recently where customer had all 4 checked and tested ok but still had a faulty injector .If it were my job i would look at changing the injector

Be carefully my verus configures these injectors in cylinder order where as all my others do them in firing order try unplugging a couple to log a fault code to see how it sees the injectors or maybe try a different scanner

And I thought that CYL 3 was injector 2.

INJECTOR 1 = CYLINDER 1
INJECTOR 2 = CYLINDER 3
INJECTOR 3 = CYLINDER 4
INJECTOR 4 = CYLINDER 2

Therefore INJ 3 = CYL 4 But CYL 3 = INJ 2

???

Or am I wrong again. ?

I agree with Tony, well thats the way i have done them for years and all been ok, and i have done 1 or 2.

My autodiagnos configures these injectors and sees them just as you say but for some reason my verus seems to see them normally when I get to work ill unplug no 3 injector on a taxi I have in and scan it with verus as I may be configuring them wrong with the verus and getting away with it all tho haven't done it with that for a while, also if you are using a snap on scanner why when it asks do you want to callibrate another injector do you have to say no or it forgets to finish off the one you have just started maybe my scanner just always seems strange to me tho.

Many thanks to you Kevin you were spot on. I reread previous posts and the penny finally dropped.
FAULT CODES CYLINDER NUMBERS ARE IN FIRING ORDER.
RECODING IS IN PHISICAL LOCATION ORDER.
I recoded all four injectors this way and she ran as sweet as a nut.

Think of it this way round mate.

Cylinder Number . .
1 2 3 4
1 3 4 2
Firing order
equals injector No..

i.e. on your post, transpose your words "injector" and "cylinder"

I found the KTS and ACR4 the easiest tools to re-code with.

Glad its sorted, i use IDS to do this and it list,s and promps cylinder/injector corralation.
So if i did get it right, i must have paid attention to it some-time. Unlike ME to do that

I Must Admit that i am not a very observant person and i do tend to forget a lot but I use IDS to code Injectors in as I would not trust Most Aftermarket Tools as far as i could throw them.

Also they tend to over complicate an already clouded issue.

But I am sure that on IDS its as I stated Earlier unless i have completely missed the point. ??

( I Have actually just checked some other posts on various sites and seen people say that it is as others gave stated ) ??

Also if i have got it wrong, So have Autodiagnos. ??

Copied and pasted from their site. :-

The four 16 digit injector codes are listed in firing order, not cylinder order. Top left is injector 1(Cyl1), Top right is injector 2(Cyl3), Bottom left is injector 3(Cyl4) and Bottom right is injector 4(Cyl2)

Injector 1 (Cylinder 1)
Injector 2 (Cylinder 3)
Injector 3 (Cylinder 4)
Injector 4 (Cylinder 2)

The Way I have always understood it is that :-

Cyl 1 fires first, ( inj 1 )

Cyl 3 fires next ( Inj 2 )

Cyl 4 fires Next ( inj 3 )

Cyl 2 fires last so thats ( inj 4 )

hi my verus tell fault in firing order but then you code in jector to cyl the way i read that code is cyl 3 is injector 4, then i would code 4 on 4 job done , never used ids so cant say how that does it, how it all helps Tony

I wasn't going to get involved with this topic again (only just recovered from the last time

The only advice I would offer, is that you experiment with your own tool & learn it's method. The problem with re entering the correction factor codes for all cyliners in one hit, is that you won't know if you have done it correctly or otherwise.

Do the offending cylinder only, that way you will be sure of your proceedure. After all, what's the point in telling the PCM or IDM the same correction codes that are already stored (for the fault free cylinders at least)

Hi all, as Dave has said only re-code the cylinder that you are working on, ie; replacing the injector, by re-coding the other cylinders(without doing any work) you are resetting the fuel trims of the cylinders and the vehicle could in fact run worse. HTH
