Renault Megane II 1.5 DCi 2003 - Crank sensor fault #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Code or CC *: K9K722 1.5

Engine cuts out when warm, but starts first time when cold. Have replaced crank sensor with after market one but will not start at all.I beleave the crank sensors are prone to failure, but can't understand why it will not start at all withe replacement sensor.

Hi Richard.

Was the crank sensor replaced "on a hunch", or was there some evidence pointing you toward it?

Dave has a valid point, but i always fit a genuine renault sensor and always ask if there is a wiring mod kit, wired the wrong way around they do not start.

Hi Richard.

I don't know you or how you go about the job & I can't tell from your post, what tests have been carried out. I do understand the logic behind the decision to replace the crank sensor.

The reason for my last post, was that I think you would benefit by scoping the sensor instead of guessing about it's functionality.

Please don't take this as a criticism, as only,three years ago, before I had a scope, I too was pi55ing in the wind & making ill informed diagnostic decisions. Imagine the confidence you would have in the case of this Clio, if you could visualise the signal quality from the old & new sensors. It really does take much of the guess work out of many diagnostic tasks.

The scope is one of those tools that, once you have become familiar with its use, it will have you wondering "how the hell did I manage before?" The answer is unfortunately that "It was mostly guesswork & pi55ing in the wind!"

It maybe that you have done some testing & I have misjudged the situation, if so then I apologise.

Hi Dave no offence taken, I posted the question on behalf of another garage who had asked my advice, as he had changed the crank sensor. I went out to the Megane yesterday & put the old crank sensor back in, vehicle started straight away, faults present were coolant temp sensor ATT & multiple ramp fuel pressure faults MEM, no crank sensor faults at all, I ran the engine up to 84 deg c & held at 2000rpm criuse speed revs & watched the fuel rail pressure which was only 660 -780 bar dropping now & again to 280 bar nearley stalling, I have suggested the fuel filter be replaced before any further checks be carried out. I was expecting to see about 1000- 1030 bar at cruise speed revs. I will let you Know the out come when he's replaced the filter, I think poor maintenance may have been the problem all the time. Hi, the pressure will not be very high at cruise(because of loading values) but it should be stable. HTH
