VW Golf 1.9 BKC 2005 - No comms with engine ECU - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Code or CC *: 1.9 BKC
( Optional ) ECU Type: Bosch EDC16

No comms with engine ecu.
Customer reported intermittent failure to start getting steadily worse, now will not run at all.
Pump doesnt prime when ignition switched on, no management lamp, and cooling fan keeps coming on and off with KOEO.
Most other modules have fault codes for "no communicaton with engine ecu".
Checked feeds and earths off AD wiring diagram, and all seem to be present. Feeds come to ecu via ignition relays so would say they are working.
2.5 volts on the can lines at the ecu plug so canbus seems in tact too.

Anyone come across this fault on the MK 5?

Suspecting ecu from results I have gathered so far, but with customer saying it has been intermittent before hand it puts doubt in my mind.
If the ecu was at fault I would have expected it to go altogether.

Any thoughts welcome

Hi James, I had exactly this type of fault on a Mark 4 just before Christmas, could you please post exact fault codes as this will give a clearer picture.
Golfs are prone to getting water in the ECU so will be worth checking this as well, but mine turned out to be a faulty wire from system relay (109) ? it had continuity but would not carry current, by grounding the relevent pin (49 in your case I think) it would start, or alternatively by powering pin 87 at relay.
With both ends of the wire disconnected and 12v probe applied I was only getting 7.5v out, running a new wire cured the problem, the old one must have been hanging on by a few strands although it was well protected in a large loom.
Hope this helps but sods law says you will probably have a different fault!!

Thanks Roger, think mine will be a different fault as the mk5 is a complete different set up to the mk4. Had relay 109 issues myself over the years but the mk5's are relatively fresh out of the warranty period so looks like this fault of mine may become a common one.

Hi James
We had one same problems you list, We checked Pin 52 when working OK wire showed Live Then brief earth then back to live, when fault present fuel pump relay not powering up.earth pulse missing when fault present. We fitted new ECU £800 from dealers (EDC161EU)

Hi Peter, when you had your fault, did you have no ecu communication too?
Had a bit more time on it today and it is looking more and more like the ecu.

No comms with ecu when fault prsent. Pin 52 ign on live then brief earth then live you will hear relay click in.

Got a donor 2nd hand ecu to try and it has cured my problem.
Pump primed, and I have management lamp, and glow plug lamp.
Taking delivery of AutoLogic with VAG package on Thursday, so i'll be asking the question if it's possible to code a second hand unit to the vehicle.

Yes, the second hand unit can be programmed to the car with AL James.

Thanks Sean, is it a job I can just go and do anytime without having to send in a log etc?
Or do I need support at hand? Was thinking of doing it saturday thats all.

Hi James, no definate answer I'm afraid.
You need the pin codes from both ECUs to allow you to change the code in the replacement unit.

Go into pin extraction in the engine ECU (if listed) and try to read the code and then the same with the second unit.
If you cant read the pin out of the original unit(comms issue) then go into the DPI (dash) and read the pin from there.

If you can get both pins then you can do it yourself, if you cant then you need to send a log to have the pin code extracted for you.
