Kia Sedona 2.9 D 2002 - Non starter, code P0340 camshaft sensor #

We have had this towed in non starter. Fault code P0340 camshaft sensor. We scoped the cam sensor but no signal. We fitted new sensor but it is the same. Camshaft is turning and reference pin is in the cam ok.
We have power to the sensor and a good earth.
Is this a hall sensor fitted to these engines.

Cam sensor is hall effect. Cam sensor is not listed in KIA,s (genuine) trouble shooting guide for non starting.
Do you have any live data as these do like eating the HP pump try doing an archive search. I have done a few as has Martin Young.

I have live data on my Multi-Scan
Fuel pressure at rail is 180 bar, target pressure is 170bar. Which i thought was low.
RPM when cranking is only 30rpm which i thought was low.
I have scoped the crank sensor which seems fine.
I am strugling to find any information on this car.

30 RPM. ?? Thats one RPM every 2 seconds. ?? i am not surprised that the rail pressure is only 170 bat at 30 rpm.

something definitely not right with your readings. ????????

The aim is to reach a pressure of 200bar in 1.5 revolutions, but that can be reached easily if the injectors are blocked with 'frag' for the pump.
But your crank sensor (magnetic type) is suspect at 30 rpm at cranking.

The live data is from my Hanatech Multi-Scan but i have never trusted the accuracy of it.
I will check the crank sensor in the morning to see if it is picking up the proper engine speed. I will also check the rail pressure as well.
Can anyone tell me what rail pressure is needed when cranking.

I have checked the rail pressure and it is 211bar which is the same as a ford mondeo tdci which i have in my workshop.
I have scoped the crank sensor and it is showing the engine cranking at 230rpm.
The injectors do not switch when cranking.

Hi mate,
minimum pressure should be about 1000 bar. Check crank sensor signal. Check vacuum from high pressure pump to tank. This is a delphi system, no pick up pump, it has a transfer pump in HP pump. The crank sensor, pressure sensor, hp pump then rail are all possibilities. You need to get the kit to test. If not then use volt meter connected to pressure sensor and record voltages and I will check what they should be for each pressure.

I have changed the rail pressure sensor, no difference. I have checked the rail pressure with my sealed rail kit 211 bar cranking. I have done the same test on a tdci mondeo in our workshop, it was slightly less pressure when cranking but runs fine.
I have scoped the crank sensor and getting a good wave.
I know that a mondeo with the delphi system will not start when the cam sensor is faulty.
I am getting P0340 cam sensor fault when i try to start the car. I have fitted a new cam sensor but no luck.

Hi Brian,
Found this.....(but relates to Kia Sedona V6 3.2 2002)
Unfortunately doesn't seem to have anything on the diesel version.

Also, there is a tsb on P0340 occurring on the Rio which is cured by software update (petrol version again) and faulty crank sensors.
Potentially all useless info but maybe better than nothing.

Hi Brian,
you are right, it does prevent vehicle inj working if cam beaks engine off. If engine running it will stay running till engine turned off.
The ecu pins are as follows, 14 for ground, 38 for signal and 37 for power supply. Check supply voltage is present.

Thanks for all your help so far.
I am no further on with this car. I am struggling to get a wiring diagram for the engine managment system. I am going to check the power supplies and earths to the engine ecu. And any relays in the system. If anyone could help me obtain these it would be much appreciated.

Hi Mate last e mail was a mare. What diagrams do you need, I brought the whole manual home. Di you try the air SHUTOFF valve in throttle. Sorry about shit off valve.

Thanks Kev for all the info you sent. I went back to the beast this afternoon, hooked up my scope to make sure there was no pulse at the injectors, cranked the engine and it started. Switched it off and would not start.
I am thinking that the ecu is faulty.
I will check the voltage from the rail sensor at the ecu in the morning and if it is ok it will be off to the dealer.
