Re Mercs Yes they do. I had a similar problem on a big V8 petrol now you mention it. MAF fault. Before fittig new MAF engine was very flat and would not rev enough to cause the cut out to operate but was able to confirm poor operation by scope. After fitting new MAF, reved freely but cut out at about 3000. "Now what! sez oi! But suspected some sort of "safety" feature so took for a drive where everything proved fine. Bumped into customer (not literally) a few days later in Supermarket car park where he said "Its a new car" I had explained that MAF's can deteriorate over a long time without the driver really noticing it untill they "suddenly" get really bad (A bit like vehicle batteries!)
