Thanks All OK. So the lad could not get to the TDC locking pin on the flywheel so pulled all up until the cam locking pin could be inserted and marked the rest with tippex. Fitted belt kit, rotated the engine and found all OK.Re-assembled cases etc road test and all fine. Owner collected. Vehicle returned. Problem occurred when revved hard above 3000rpm. Removed covers and on inspection with all other marks lined up the crank appeared half a tooth out. It is impossible to get to the f/wheel locking pin hole without serious stripping out, so lined up the points and allowed the error on the pump sprocket, partial re-assemble run up, and all was fine. All I can assume is the angle of the pump markings were slightly off or parallax error? The difficulty in fitting the belt was trying to get the slack out of the pump/crank side and still keeping marks aligned. As an aside the Vivid illustration shows the crank key at 12 o`clock with pins in, actually on this vehicle it was more like 10 o`clock this confused him further,(stress induced mind fug). Vehicle returned to customer after a thrash up the 217, no complaints as yet, probably being recovered from somewhere in the Outer Hebrides as I write this. Thanks again to everyone.
