    Hi Bryan,
    Its not the crank pulley (drives aux belt)that wears but the bottom spocket (toothed, that cambelt runs around) that wears on its mounting to the crankshaft. Instead of a conventional woodruff key it has a flat cut into the circumference abit like a ' D ' shape.
    When slack the sprocket can chatter and the timing can slip from good to bad giving intermittant poor starting. I've done a few of these the worst one needed a new crankshaft really, guess what the customer traded car in.
    Obviously it is always wise to fit a new crank pulley bolt upon cambelt replacement.

    I hope this helps, first one I saw after checking glow plugs, compressions, contaminated fuel etc. had me pulling out what little hair I have left.
