I would be grateful for any inputs on this problem. It belongs to my next door neighbour and has asked me to have a look at the problem.
History: The initial running problem was when the vehicle was under load it can cut out, drop into limp but after restarting by the side of the road, would run perfectly again. He has put up with this problem for a couple of years and basically drove around the problem.
Diagnostics: Not much I'm afraid. I went and had a look at the vehicle just prior to Xmas and sadly apart from the fault code only EOBD info was available which is quite limited and of not much value...ie Fuel Pressure etc. Hunting on the internet drew me to a known problem on these vehicles whereas the coating within the fuel tank clogs up the fuel pick up and sieve. The fuel filter hadn't been changed for a while so the first stop was to change this which was done with an after-market diesel filter. He also complained of intermittent long cranking on start-up. The vehicle failed to start a couple of days ago after an MOT but fired up instantly on a sniff. This morning it would not start. It cranks over at a good speed with and without a booster pack. However it started instantly on a sniff. The same fault code was logged. Freeze Frame tells me it occurred 4km again which he concurs that it went into limp when he tried to put it under load. This was cleared again and under continuous cranking this morning no fault codes appeared at all.
Question: Is this poor starting related to his P1188 problem? Perhaps he has two separate problems. He intends to replace the diesel filter again with a Kia OE and then have a look at the pick-up inside the fuel tank. I would be grateful for thoughts during the interim.
