I had a similar fault a few months ago on a rover. The crank sensor had a 12 volt live, a ground and a ecu supplied 5v on the signal wire that was then switched to ground by the sensor.
The sensor waveform was very odd but consistent, as if I was capturing two signals at once on the same channel.
I found that with the sensor disconnected when I probed the loom connector the 12 volt and ground was good and stable, but on the signal wire - instead of having a steady 5v it had it's own waveform.
This turned out to be several corroded wires in some trunking at the rear of the engine that were swimming in water. As soon as I separated them the 5v was stable again and the sensor waveform was back to normal.
