I always measure the supply fuel pressure with an inline gauge and cause restrictions to challenge dirrerent parts of the system.
Although, I was curious to see what would happen if I tested it as you say with a dead headed gauge straight on the back of the pump so I did it, on a mitsubishi shogun I was checking the supply on anyway.
It would appear at cranking speed the the gauge goes negative in very tiny increments, but not to its full potential I think due to the rotational speed of the pump.
As Lee said exactly how did you supply the pump with a seperate supply?
Also think about what Mark has said and I am sure everything will become clear.
