I agree with you the layout is madness. I had one of these where the SLS had collapsed for this reason. Some models have the radio/satnav etc. in the rear quarter and still they get wet!
In answer to your question, I had an M5 that needed a new radio (guess what, water ingress) and it was plug-and-play if that helps.
