Did you by any chance have an oscilloscope? Checking the crank sensor signal and any interference would be easy with one. You could then cut the offending wire and see if it improves the signal.
I seem to remember the one I did had different colours too, but it still worked.
Having said that, Jon has said the TPI relates to the 1.4 engine. Not the 1.9.....
