check the wiring harness where it runs between the fan housing & past the starter motor, they have a bad habit of chaffing & letting the "green death" in. Seen a few of these with various sensor faults due to this issue.
Another thing that kills them is the engine turning over too slow / starter fault - needs to be over 250RPM for the engine to start.
There was a bulletin for the throttle pedal on the Golf 5 / A3 of the same model year giving issues as well.
