The symptoms reminds me of a fault we had with a 607 2.2 hdi peugeot, the inlet butterflys which there is 2 of (peugeot call them dozer units) 1 flap is sprung in the open position and 1 is sprung closed, when started up from cold the intercooler feed side is closed and the warmed air bypass side is open , this is for lower emmissions on start up (i think).
On our car the warm air bypass flap wasnt opening so in this case both flaps where closed and no air could get in the engine and it would blue smoke and then cut out.
On the 607 the butterflys are vaccum operated via vac solenoids , a think on the 407 they are electronic butterfly control, just something to check.
