I actually own the vehicle in question now & it has done approx 20K since the unorthodox repair was performed. Although I don't usually like to carry out "bodges" like this, there was no other obvious way forward, so a little "outside the box" thinking was required.
I don't see any reason why this "workaround" should be considered to be a "bad idea".
As always... I am open to opinions.
