Hi Paul, This system should have a VE-EDC pump?(rotory pump)if so then you can carry out an actuator test on the advance solenoid whilst the engine is running(its a two wire valve that has a live feed and the ECU controls the earth via a PWM command)
Please do not overlook the cam box pressure as the advance solenoid will not work properly if the cavity pressure is low. HTH
