OK. Getting back to my original question about this, I didn't get much in the way of help except for Dave's amazement that people like me have not cottoned onto the idea that glow plugs do not contribute much to cold starting. OK thanks - lesson learnt. Anyway, tested glow plugs and No 1 was faulty. Advised customer to have all 4 changed which I (think?) is good practice and he declined and had just the one changed. Removal was no problem with long reach socket and problem was solved.

Thought I would post a fix not just because of protocol - but there may be someone else out there dipping their big toe into the world of diesel technology.
