Some of you may already be fully aware of this but I just thought I'd share a moments panic I had earlier! Lucky it was a Ford!
A customer came in today enquiring about having the speed limiter removed from their '56reg Transit Connect, having done scores of them and therefore knowing its a 5 minute job, I offered to do it for him there & then, which although he was in a hurry he agreed to go ahead and have done!
For some reason this one was slightly different to all the others I have done and basically required a full software update and reinitialising of the PATS system! I did not have a BSU attached as as I know people have discussed on here a few times it is rarely necessary when updating software on the lower spec fords & vauxhalls, plus I was expecting it to be a quick reconfiguration job!
Anyway, the point is, as the update was installing the vehicle power suddenly cut off and needless to say it corrupted the ECU and the f###king thing wouldn't start!! It turns out that this was an ex-electricity board van and had a circuit breaker added to it to cut power if it senses a drain, althought the battery was good enough for my needs the shut-off switch is obviously a lot more sensitive in protecting the now long gone gizmos that were fitted! As I said luckily it was a Ford and I could attach a BSU and reflash everything!
The reset switch was located on the dash under the steering column; one to watch out for peeps as I believe they were fitted to all their vans!
2 hours and a pissed off customer later the Moral of the story: always use a BSU
