I am investigating a pattern called "Rustic Scenery" by Joseph Clementson. It was registered on December 2, 1842, registry mark at https://www.flickr.com/photos/94374719@N08/49195153592/in/dateposted/. Interestingly, I have very rarely also seen it on another pattern of his, "Lucerene". The parcel number at the bottom of the diamond registry mark shows a 3.
In the section "Registration Diamonds & Numbers" on thepotteries.org website it indicates that the bottom number for diamond registry marks (1842-1867) "tells us how many items were included in the registration, (sometimes known as bundles or packages)". What exactly does this mean? Are they items by the same manufacturer, essentially a different version of a pattern or shape? In a list of registered patterns for Clementson's Dec 2, 1842 entry, the patent numbers are listed as 2599-2600. It appears that one is missing if he registered a third item. Some patterns in the list have parcel/bundle numbers up to 27. Any ideas on how the parcel/bundle number was assigned or exactly what it means?
The parcel number does not indicate any number of items. It just shows that more than one application for design registration was made on that day. Hence “parcel” 1 may be registered by one applicant on a particular date, parcel 2 by another, parcel 3 by yet another etc. It would presumably have been used within the design registry to file away the documents relevant to each registration.
