As with most countries I suspect that there are good parts and good people, and bad parts and bad people, and obviously your opinion holds slightly more weight that than those of us that have never lived there, however, I would say that your own impression of it is still very specific to you, and it doesn't tally at all with the opinions of some of my friends and family who have either lived there for a long time, or who have lived their all their lives. They are utterly despondent at the direction the country is going in as a whole, not just in their neigbourhood/county/state, and it's very clearly because of the people in government and the kind of thinking and actions that their way of governing is inspiring in people. It's also one of the main reasons that I'm not actually on my way to America this week to watch the EFC games - that's not an assumption, that's reality.

it's some lunatic fringe group being set up by another lunatic fringe group. If you assume you know America enough to think they are an integal part of the country then you are as thick as them. I'm sick of these constant links that purport to show what America is like. If I had the mind to I could flood this forum every day with examples of what America is really like and that is close to being better than most other countries and that includes England.
