So so very dumb. Greatness finds a way.

The average idiot just thinks certain people are just born with incredible talent. They have no idea the lengths that the people at the top go to in order to achieve greatness. 98% of professional athletes are professional athletes because they have spent 10,000 hours or more in dedicated practice honing their skills....and even if some people understand that fact, most still don't comprehend how much time that actually is and how hard that is to accumulate. And the 10k plus guys are just the "average" pros. The guys at the top like Kobe, Rory, Mike, Djokovic, Tiger, etc are relentless to another level. They'll all have 20,000 hours plus of dedicated practice just working on their skills and thousands upon thousands of other hours lifting, stretching, doing cardio and conditioning, plyos, and recovery.

Rory is just willing to do what it takes to put himself in the best position to win. It doesn't guarantee he will win it, he's just doing what he did because it probably gives him a 1-2% edge which probably results in a 1 stroke advantage. Everyone else just wasn't willing to sacrifice what he was for 1%. That's the difference in a great athlete and the other professional athletes.

None of what he did was an unfair advantage. It was the separator.

They may not have the means to do what Rory did, but tough. When I heard that's what he did, flying in and out to play Augusta leading up to the Masters, I thought it was brilliant.

And the 10,000 hours stuff sound like it came right out of the Malcolm Gladwell book. People have no idea how much time and effort it takes to master something - music, sports, etc. Those 10,000 hours don't include the time playing - just the practice. Agree with that stuff as well.

its a good generic understanding of the dedication it takes to be great.

The actual hours really varies by activity, but the main point that people should understand that just playing 10,000 of golf / basketball / guitar / etc doesn't make one great. Sure, you'll be good and better than most, but you won't be great. The 10k hours (or whatever the number) must be dedicated practice. For golf that means probably 1,000-2,000 hours of just working on your drive mechanics. 2,000 hours of your putting stroke and learning how to read greens. etc etc. Basketball is thousands of hours of shot mechanics, dribbling specific practice, footwork, body positioning.....all of it is tedious and boring....but doing the boring stuff every single day adds up over time and it allows people develop the ability to do things consistently that mere mortals can only do with a bit of luck 10% of the time.

Gladwell's Outliers is entertaining and the gateway to the theory, but the research of Anders Erikson and the other books really provide incredible insight into what it really takes to achieve greatness in an activity. There is no such thing as natural greatness. The general public just assumes that great athletes are genetically lucky and "naturally gifted"....and while genetics certainly does give some a leg up in certain activities (especially things like sprinting or distance running.), 90% of greatness is determined by nurture over nature.

Natural ability does come into play in some instances, but it's in instances of genetic anomalies. Sprinting is one. I could have my kid spend 10K hours of dedicated practice attempting to become a world class sprinter and he still isn't going to make the US Olympic team. Something crazy like 95% of Olympic Sprinters all carry a genetic mutation that is specific to an upper highlands tribal area in Jamaica. Almost all of the olympic sprinters can trace lineage back to it. It's the same with distance runners and high-altitude regions of Kenya's Rift Valley and the Ethiopian Highlands. It's due to a genetic mutation that adapted that population to do something that "normal" people couldn't. There are also other examples to lesser extents like mutations that caused abnormally high VO2 Max capabilities in certain areas of Nordic regions.....but these examples are the exceptions, not the rules and they only exist because of genetic mutations.

For things like golf, chess, guitar, etc literally anyone can become a world class participant.

For things like basketball, height obviously is a factor, but not one that can't be overcome. For every 7 footer in the nba, there are a multiple of players under 6'4" that play in the league. Some of those people are "naturally athletic" and speed or jumping comes more naturally to them vs. others, but both speed and jumping can be taught and gained over time. Contrary to popular belief, pretty much any reasonable fit 16 year old boy can be trained to have a 35" vertical and a 4.5 sec 40 yard dash time with a couple years of training.

So, yes, in general your point of natural talent being part of the equation isn't wrong....but it is about 10% of the contribution to greatness for almost all activities minus the ones effected by genetic mutations.

and i could have had daily lessons and hours hitting balls and practicing chipping and putting. It wouldn't matter. I would never make the PGA. I would be scratch. Perhaps a + golfer. I just don't have the body mechanics.

Neither did any professional golfer before they spent thousands of hours working on it.

The time spent practicing that builds a myolin sheath that creates a neural pathway for them to be able to have the body mechanics to swing like they do and to be able to do it time after time. No one is born with that innate ability. It’s just built over time and (almost) anyone can develop the ability to do it.

The invoice for it is just thousands of hours of repetition of innane boring motions. Most people aren’t willing to pay it.

I have shorter arms. I have shorter legs. I'm the same exact height as Rory McIlroy. But even if i was the same weight has him, standing next to him you would see the differences.

But if you were to chart their dedicated practice hours at the game from 8 years old until today it would be 95% proportional to their performance and career earnings.

Same with chess. Same with piano. Same with a freestyle rapper. Same with a karate master.

Some sports will have a physical edge component like certain positions in basketball, but 90% of greatness and achievement in an activity comes from thousands of hours of dedicated practice.

People want to believe otherwise that some people are born special, but it’s just not true….. an excuse that people use because they aren’t willing or capable to dedicate the time necessary to become great themselves.

If you did 10,000 hours of dedicated guitar practice you absolutely would be one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

It's just an incredibly monumental task. 1. People don't understand how much time that actually is. It's 416.67 days....nonstop. If you take out 10 hours a day for sleeping, eating, and other basic human necessities and did nothing else but practice your craft for the other 14 hours in a day it would be 714.28 days to achieve the 10,000 hours. Then you have to contend with the fact that your brain physically won't let you concentrate for 14 hours a day, every day in a concentrated state practicing something...Let's be generous and say that it's possible for someone to do 4 hours of dedicated practice daily (which would still require many significant breaks to maintain concentration so it would actually take more like 6-7 hours to practice 4). It would take you 2,500 days of doing dedicated practice 4 hours every single day with no days off to achieve 10,000 hours total. That's basically 7 years of your life doing absolutely nothing other than existing and practicing your craft. 1/10th of an average persons life.

I also cannot oversell enough the difference in just doing something for 10,000 hours and doing dedicated practice to get better at something for 10,000 hours. Dedicated practice is basically the equivalent of sitting down and writing computer code. It requires an extreme level of concentration and pushing themselves.

but by playing you are improving your skills. I do it all the time.

I change the songs often trying to practice the switching between chords. especially ones i have trouble switching to in time.

i also seek out new songs with new chords i don't know yet in order to learn them.

at first it was so hard to change to a dm or an F. now it's so much easier.

Sure, but it doesn't lead down the same path. My oldest loves basketball.

If he plays 10,000 hours of pick up basketball over the next 12 years, he's going to be a stud in the Spokane men's league at 28 years old....probably better than everyone except for the former D1 guys and the former pros.

If he spent those same 12 years doing 10,000 hours of dedicated practice (working on shot mechanics, specific drills to improve dribbing and hand eye coordination, working on body placement and footwork and reactions to the same from a defender, etc, etc) then he'll be a professional basketball player in Europe somewhere after playing at a D1 school.

That is the difference in just playing/doing something for 10k hours vs. performing dedicated practice for 10k hours. It's the differentiation between very good at something vs. great at something. Do you want to be the Top 1% or do you want to be the 1% of the 1%?

Tom Morello is absolutely on par with Slash and he became a guitar god by relentless practicing guitar for hours upon hours a day for a period of years. While he certainly played for fun sometimes, most of his time was dedicated to learning to create new sounds and ways to manipulate them.

it's not necessarily an unfair advantage. Especially when other pros could likely do the same.

A basketball court is the same where ever you go. Kobe could find a playground with a rim and get the same practice in as he would at Crypto (nee Staples).

But golf courses are all different. But again, I don't think that only he had the ability play there more than the others.

BUT THEN!

Other guys didn't have the luxury to miss 3-4 tourneys before the Masters to go put in that time. They were busy making a living.

Every person playing in the Master's could have skipped the 3-4 prior tournaments and just practiced at Augusta if they wanted to. Every one of them has sponsors and the financial means to do so. They just weren't willing to sacrifice the additional income from those other tournaments like Rory was.

The level of sacrifice that certain individuals are willing to endure is what separates every level of sports.

The kid who puts in 30 hours a month of individual work on his own is the one who is going to start on his varsity basketball team over the guy who didn't.

The kid who put in 50 hours a month of individual work on his own is the one who is going to lead his team in scoring over the other starters who were only putting in 30 each.

The kid who puts in 70 hours a month is the kid who is going D1 where the 50 hour a month kids are either done with sports or are going D3.

The kid who made a D1 team and lives in the gym and puts in 90 hours a month on his own is going to go play in Europe after his college career is done.

The kid who obsesses over basketball and has teammates who think he is crazy because he has the team managers in the gym with him at 10:00PM every night rebounding his 500 made 3pt shots and puts in 120 hours a month is going to end up in the NBA.

This is all just a function of how much are individuals willing to sacrifice. Most people talk a good game. Some attempt to sacrifice what they know it takes to be great, but cannot keep it up consistently. The few at the top of the mountain do everything, everyday to achieve greatness. Everything they do is regimented to give them just a 1% edge.

Here is what Rory does:

Rory says he follows a strict routine during the PGA Tour season to ensure proper rest and recovery:

• No caffeine after 2 PM
• Last meal at least 2 hours before bed
• Magnesium and theanine for sleep quality
• Blue-light-blocking glasses in the evening
• Sauana or Epsom salt bath when available
• Cool room temperature for sleep

He follows the same three-hour routine before every round: arrive at the course → warm up in the gym → eat breakfast → hit balls on the range → putting green.

The other guys could do what he does, but they don't because they want a life outside of golf. They could skip the other tournaments to prep for the Master's, but they don't because they don't want to give up the money from them. They aren't willing to sacrifice everything else to give themselves a slight advantage that doesn't guarantee a win.

They don't dare to be great, and that's why they'll never achieve what Rory did.

rate for the entire week of play was between 47-49.

That is just an absolutely insane number in general, let alone while playing in the pinnacle event of your sport.

To achieve that, one would have to do hours of cardio daily for years and also spend significant time doing mindful activities like yoga, meditation, etc as well. It is just a crazy number.

So our neighbor had given us clubhouse tickets to the Genesis tournament. I coincidentally signed up to volunteer for the event. So the wife and kid went and were hanging out. The plan was that when I was done, I'd meet them up there. We wanted to get out before the end to beat the crowd.

So I go up there to get them and the wife needs to go to the bathroom before we leave. I didn't realize that the ladies room was right near the exit for the player's clubhouse. So me and the kid were just standing there waiting for her.

So the door to the clubhouse opens and Rory storms out. He was in no mood. He had blown a lead and should have won. So he was understandably pissed. But he was walking right at us as we were in the hallway to get out. I didn't want to bother the guy as I knew that he was upset. So I just smiled, waved and said, "Hi Rory." I was hoping for a smile or nod. He didn't acknowledge me at all. I wasn't mad. It was all good.

He takes three steps past us and stops. Spins around walks right back up to us and kneels down to be eye to eye with the kid. He says "Hi, what's your name." He answers. Rory grabs his hand to shake it. "Hi Axl, thanks for being here." Gets up smiles at me and then walks off.

He didn't need to do that at all. But he took the time to meet a kid. And at that moment I became a fan. I just yelled out "Thank you, Rory." with a tear in my eye.
