Without a computer, it is much tougher to do medical things anymore..they all use the "portal"..but if you refuse they do still call the old school way. My friend and some older people I know refuse the "portal" interaction and while it may take a litle longer, they still get the calls.
My new Pain Clinic Doc who does my spinal injections refuses to use the computer for communication (has no "portal"), and it was wild to hear that! I figured the hospital he is connected with (physically in the building) would make him use it.

While visiting home last week and assisting my dad who suffered a recent fall, dad related that Northwestern is an absolute bureaucratic nightmare to deal with. Even more so because dad does not have / use either a cellphone or a computer. He cannot even walk into his family physician's office (5 minutes from his house) and schedule an appointment because all scheduling has to be routed through Northwestern's central system. And while that can be done via a landline, it takes forever with long wait times and multiple levels of bureaucracy before you finally get the right extension and the person you are trying to reach.
