2 charged with threatening CPD surveillance camera installation crew: ‘Move the f****** cameras!’
Two men face felony charges for allegedly threatening a city work crew that was installing a Chicago Police Department surveillance camera near a neighborhood playground, the same playground where prosecutors say officers found the men carrying guns just 20 minutes later.
Prosecutors said Deandre Coleman, 18, and Jamarion Banks, 19, confronted a 49-year-old employee of the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications at about 11:48 a.m. on April 20 as he installed a CPD surveillance camera near Park No. 578 at Wolcott and Maypole avenues on the Near West Side.
According to prosecutors, Coleman and Banks approached the worker while wearing masks, though Coleman’s mask was raised high enough for the employee to see his tattoos.
The pair then ordered the worker and his assistant to “move the f****** cameras,” prosecutors said. Coleman allegedly put his hand behind his back and grabbed his waistband, implying that he was armed.
Fearing they would be shot, the OEMC employee and his assistant returned to their city vehicle and left the area without finishing the installation. Because the camera had not yet been activated, it did not capture the confrontation. The worker parked around the block and called his supervisor, who then contacted CPD.
While waiting nearby, the worker saw Coleman and Banks emerge from a building on Lake Street and walk toward his city truck without masks, prosecutors said. Banks allegedly displayed a firearm while looking toward the vehicle, causing the worker to drive away again out of fear. He later met responding officers a few blocks away.
Officers soon found Coleman and Banks on a children’s playground at Park No. 578, steps away from the surveillance camera they allegedly prevented from being installed, prosecutors said. Both men resisted arrest, and prosecutors said officers needed “two to three minutes” to take them into custody and recover firearms from both suspects.
Police allegedly found Banks with a loaded handgun in his groin area. Coleman had a loaded handgun in his waistband that was equipped with an extended magazine and an automatic-fire switch, according to a detention filing.
Prosecutors said Banks was already serving first-time weapon offender probation in another gun case at the time of his arrest. Coleman has prior juvenile adjudications for armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon, the detention filing said.
Both men are charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, intimidation, aggravated assault, and multiple counts of resisting officers. Judge Shauna Boliker granted prosecutors’ petition to detain Banks pending trial, but she denied prosecutors’ detention petition for Coleman, who was released pending trial.
