I think the "front" is multifaceted and thus pretty expansive. And it can differ wildly in nature from area to area. In some areas, the front is pretty remote (fields and woods). In other areas, it is urban. From some of the maps I have seen, there are all kinds of odd pockets and salients. Hardly a straight line.

There are at least some civilians still living in and around the towns and cities where the front lines are located. It's kind of surreal. But a lot of people, particularly older ones, have no options. Nowhere else to go.
