The problem is that the teachers' unions saw what the firefighters and cops were getting and started demanding the same, in a profession where the work not only doesn't demand it, but where schools/unions/union contracts believe that teachers are better with more education and pay teachers accordingly for obtaining advanced degrees. One of my friends was a Lexington Fayette County police officer. He retired at around 51 or 52 after his mandatory 25 (I think) years of service.
He now works as a security officer for the local school district.
