i met tons of women who were struggling with the realization that they would never become mothers and would likely never get married, and it had a terrible impact on most of them.

I have no idea what has caused this widespread problem. But I heard a brief radio segment this morning that maybe explains things, at least to some degree. Handing out cell phones to young girls still in grade school and junior high significantly increases the incidence of all kinds of emotional and behavioral problems. Multiple studies out there for many years documenting this reality.
