Our problems are more than just lack of clinical finishing (and sloppy defending) though. It’s telling that our best chance came from KAF harrying and dispossessing their keeper, rather than from any strategic attacking build up. Overall play was too often disjointed, directionless and off the cuff.
Much as I like the idea of playing with wingers, in principle, it’s just not working. Fawunmi looks good occasionally but is lightweight. Seems much better suited to a role as sub (plan B rather than plan A). On the plus side, Drummond looked a lot less of a fish out of water when he moved over from the left to right wing. Perhaps the only positive to come out of yesterday.
MM seemed to be on the right track with his selection yesterday, realising that the midfield needed reinforcement. Unfortunately chose the wrong individual to do that. Pett (definitely) or Chilvers (possibly - we haven’t seen enough to know) would in hindsight have been a better choice to start than Payne.
But it’s still early days. I trust he will get it right eventually.
