7 league goals last season including 5 in his last 8 matches, once he got properly going. He hasn’t been prolific but presumably Mellon put more weight on his output at the back end of last season than overall. Which is reasonable. No need to exaggerate to make your point.

I reckon his best position is as one of the wide forwards in a 4-3-3. But we haven’t been playing that this season. Possibly we should.
Agree that he is hopeless as a left winger/left midfield in a 4-4-2. If Saturday is anything to go by. Certain that he wouldn’t be playing there but for Stevens getting crocked when it was almost too late to do anything about it. And expect him to be dropped for next Saturday.

I think our main problem on Saturday (apart from the red card, obviously) was more to do with the rigid formation than the personnel. Norburn and Appiah-Forson might turn out to be the best midfield pair in league 2. But that won’t help us much if they are outnumbered in the middle of the pitch most weeks, while we have 2 outright wingers who don’t get involved in the action anywhere near enough. One of whom isn’t really a winger anyway.

We ended up on Saturday with Pett playing wide right and Chilvers wide left - which was only slightly better, because both were out of their optimal positions. Moot point anyway, since by that time they only had Nevitt ahead of them - who looked a very poor alternative to Fondop and/or just going through the motions.

I would class Drummond, Fawunmi and Kavanagh all as ‘luxury’ players- I.e. those that can look really good when we are well on top of the opposition anyway. But don’t (can’t?) contribute anywhere near enough when the going is tough. Dubious whether any team can get away with more than one such player in the 11 at any specific time. Definitely not all 3.
