For the uninitiated, the word soccer goes back to 19th century England when the public schools played two types of football: rugby football and associated football.

Public schoolboys, being as they were, abbreviated the terminology to rugger and soccer as a distinction. As we say, the 'past' is history (but it's still there in the records!)
