Interestingly, as I'm currently laid up following my hip replacement 10 days ago (fine thank you, op was ok, swelling and bruising very uncomfortable),been watching a lot of old football on You Tube. Watched three Man U games from 1968 and 1969 and little George was pretty average in all three.
The myth of George Best has of course grown with time, as all things do.We all have rose coloured glasses. Don't get me wrong. Great player and the first 'cool' footballer. But the best player ever? Even on stats alone, not even close. Scored one every two and a half games for United, one in four for Ireland and done aged 27. Never made a World Cup,an FA Cup final or even League Cup final. Won three trophies.
Rather than the highlights of his best bits which we've all seen, watch a couple of games with full highlights(there's plenty to choose from).
The myth, lots of it perpetrated by him, doesn't match the truth. In a top thirty players of all time, he'd scrape in.
The top position is now taken. If you can't watch Messi, how he plays or rather played, and love him, you don't love football. He is unique. Loved Pele as kid(even though we saw very little of him apart from 1970) and my own personal favourite, Zidane. I remember in the nineties saying I hope I live long enough to see someone better.
Thankfully I did.
