When I first saw it I thought that thee was a bit of poetic licence involved.
He comes back from 'a job'. People had worked out what he did. And a bit of a sing song starts in his pub. With his friend James Corbitt, known to Pierrepoint as 'Tish', Pierrepoint was known as 'Tosh@. Corbitt has a girlfriend who he eventually murdered. He was sentenced to hang. Pierrepoint, not knowing Corbitt's name. Accepted the job. And actually hung his own mate! He also holds the record for hanging someone. 7 and a half seconds from entering the condemned cell, pinioning his arms, marching the condemned man onto the trap, pinioning his legs, placing the hood over his head and, the noose on his neck and then dropping him. It's a good film.
