Mellon’s folly

If you try to analyse yesterday’s performance player by player then Mellon has a lot to answer for. Hudson, Caprice and Ribson were blameless, Monthe is currently playing like he’s half asleep, just not on the ball at all. Daniels needs a break, he has become a liability. When the ball needs to be passed on to midfield he’s hoofing it; he’s the worst offender for that tactic. Give Simieu a run, at least he’s played football at a higher level. Woods has run out of ideas and has far too much influence in the game (corners, free kicks). Pett must be wondering what he’s done to be banished to the role of right winger, when last season he was the guiding light in midfield and drove us through the playoffs. Payne is Mr Anonymous; it wasn’t until the 40th minute that I realised that he was on the pitch! He has no influence over the outcome if a game at all. Stevens needs service and got none because of hoofball tactics and therefore became invisible. Drummond is NOT a starting striker. He’s easily contained by fit defenders. He is only effective when brought on as a late substitute against tiring defenders. Otherwise totally ineffective. Garner was OK but frustrating when once again resorting to his falling over forwards tactics. Was he injured? As for the subs, Quigley was an embarrassment. He does not have a football brain and is a very slow thinker. Brought off to avoid being sent off. As for Fondop, the man who dragged us practically single-handed into the playoffs last season, I think he has been treated appallingly. He is regularly expected to come on as a late substitute again and again and change the game. Not really given a chance this season and may be on his way. The two new boys, Taylor and Jaló, look a cut above League 2 standard and you’ve got to wonder why Taylor only got three minutes in the previous two games. Much wrong with the lineup and style of play and only one man to blame. Sad thing is it could all be remedied without too much change.
