Without having checked the specific numbers, I was subconsciously discounting the likes of Wrexham, Chesterfield & Notts County who all brought substantial followings with them to inflate the total attendance figures. Similarly York at home last season. Having now had a look at the numbers, I would agree that apart from those, there were maybe just up to double figures of games in NL over 3 seasons with attendances very similar to last week’s effort.
I had more in mind, average attendances:
2022/23 6660
2023/24 6924
2024/25 6152
All include local derbies, away followings, the Halifax playoff and also FA cup ties.
And also that those averages for the 3 years in NL were all higher than we had achieved for many many years prior to that in the EFL.
I guess the attendances reflect the degree of optimism that we had reached the nadir and were (are?) now headed in the right direction - after 3 decades of invariably being headed almost inexorably downwards. There doesn’t appear to be any correlation to the quality of football being played.
And likely there’s a sort of delayed reaction in terms of correlation of attendances to the team’s actual current performances. Early part of last season, poor attendances possibly reflecting disillusionment with the previous season’s late drastic slump at least as much as the current form at the time.
