I think that anything expensive or rare is a bad choice for the first few pens. Also, anything having high emotional value, such as a pen that belonged to a loved one (unless it is just held as a keepsake). First pens often take an unintentional beating, and they should be robust, and easily replaced.
Also, I recommend simple filling systems for first pens, but NOT eyedroppers. I don't keep any eyedroppers, but having some experience with them, I don't like their propensity to burp ink when nearly empty.
That said, there are a lot of choices available for simple, straightforward, practical pens at low to modest price levels that make great first pens. (Another thread, or did I miss it?)
