I finished reading “The Man With The Golden Arm” recently. It put me on an Algren kick. I Just finished The Neon Wilderness, with Never Come Morning and A Walk On The Wild Side on top of a pile of books to read. The “Golden Arm” novel is very dark. Algren and Preminger had a very short and stormy relationship, and that’s putting it mildly. It drives me nuts in having watched the film numerous times over the years (including about 5 months ago) and then reading the book. While reading it, all I could think of was Sinatra, Novak and Arnold Stang. Eleanor Parker and Darren McGavin hit the right notes, but not the other three. It’s an antiseptic studio laden effort. On another note, those that know of a toxic marriage (or may have lived through one), I highly recommend the Danish film “Loving Adults”, which is currently on Netflix. A very unsettling experience.
