John's take on BOB LE FLAMBEUR suffers greatly from his lack of familiarity with Melville, which is how much of the lingering malaise and misdirection about French noir and its relationship to American noir sprung up in the first place (and continues to fester). Someone needs to send him disks for LEON MORIN, PRETRE or LE SILENCE DE LA MER and ARMY OF SHADOWS so that he can gauge the fault lines that exist in Melville's oeuvre.
Elsewhere, he's on surer footing dealing with BODYGUARD (which he admits is mostly a waste of time, but filling in those "B's" is a priority and he wanted to touch upon Richard Fleischer) and with BODY HEAT, where (like many male members of the species) he is bit unsettled by the cultural shift toward the "femme fatale as fierce-but-wishful avenger" motif that has gained currency even in the midst of a spate of (increasingly desperate) toxic masculinity. (Note also his canny parallel between directors Lawrence Kasdan and Peter Bodganovich.)
