We move ahead from #15 to #17 as our lede post here, because John makes a rare stumble in #16 that we'll address in an off-to-the-side manner. Here he returns to his usual sure footing (and his idiosyncratic syntax) with some impressionistic readings of three 1947 noirs (still in the "B's, literally and/or figuratively!)...BOOMERANG, BORN TO KILL, and THE BRASHER DOUBLOON.
One tart comment here that might ruffle the feathers of ardent Elia Kazan fetishist Foster Hirsch: "Elia Kazan directs, a good choice for this, even better for similar Panic in the Streets that followed. Had he but continued with noirs instead of hopping Streetcars headed [in] a heavy and to-date-fast direction. Word is he didn’t think Dana Andrews was much of an actor, and here I was thinking Kazan knew all about acting." Point and set, if not game, to Mr. McElwee...
