Muller observes that most people are far too self involved to notice minor details and his own undoing results from overlooking the fact that Bartok has been selling off his investment shares due to his gambling losses. The papers are at his fingertips, but he ignores the evidence. Indeed, his new lady friend (Leslie Brooks) may be in the employ the gambling house operators as she seems determined to steer him back to the casino over and over again.
There are some sources that suggest that Henreid had a falling out with Steve Sekely and took over the direction of the film. Within a few years, Henreid would spend much more time directing, usually on television, than acting. Henreid's film "Dead Ringer" seems to be a first cousin of "The Hollow Triumph."
