It seems to me that that Cahn was a consummate pro is shooting with low budgets and tight schedules. There have, of course, been directors
like that throughout the history of Hollywood. I can’t decipher any thematic preoccupations or organizing principles to Cahn’s work.
To do so would be like that article I saw about 10 years ago in Senses of Cinema attempting to make Doris Wishman an auteur. Found here – https://www.sensesofcinema.com/2002/great-directors/wishman/.
A valiant effort, but a study in madness, imo. As it is, if you were to pick the years of 1955-1965 for b/w noirish films from the US, Don is correct,
there is a landfill’s worth of titles. Enough to have a three-day weekend festival for an entire year. Yet, as that short group of titles that Mark listed shows,
many just can’t be found. At least they can’t be found in my 4 or 5 usual places. I have been looking for the Allison Hayes film
The High Powered Rifle for years and I’ve come up dry. However, there is Private Property, Cop Hater, Street of Sinners, Hell’s Five Hours, Fallguy,
Satan In High Heels (with the buxom duo of Meg Myles and Sabrina) and, etc. etc, etc.
