I went to Merriam-Webster where it says a soap opera is "a serial drama performed originally on a daytime radio or television program and chiefly characterized by tangled interpersonal situations and melodramatic or sentimental treatment". If a series is too long or too "boring", turn it off. It's quite simple. Being committed to something that has to fit in a 90-120 minute slot seems too confining for my tastes. Confining yourself to strictly films, where cable series, like present day films, have no content or language restrictions, means that you are missing out on some quality material. I guess it's just a case of apples and oranges.
