However, these series that are spun out over an extended period of time and demand the viewer watch all the way through to stay in touch with whatever arc the makers have concocted feels like nothing more than cynical manipulation to me - all about the sponsorship and revenue and next to nothing to do with the art.
I just don't buy the argument that there's deeper characterization or a more absorbing story - any writer who is unable to put interesting characters on the screen and tell a story with a point in, say, two hours really ought to be looking to do something else. In my opinion, naturally.
