Yes, I believe that you are probably correct. What I referred to as a lost film ("The Spiritualist" a/k/a "The Amazing Mister X") was circulating by means of a 16mm print for some time. I ought to have been more specific. In any event, I was mightily impressed to see the movie in a decent 35mm print at Noir City. I really like most of the Eagle-Lion productions. Even the studio's lesser movies are somewhat interesting. "Alimony" is an unintentional laugh riot. The only one that I disliked is "Close Up." For its brief history, as an Anglo-American successor of sorts to Producers Releasing Corporation, Eagle-Lion delivered some notable noirs. "Sic Pro Optima" indeed! Interestingly, "The Amazing Mister X" and "Bury Me Dead" were filmed back to back and used many of the same crew members. John Alton was the cinematographer on both. "Bury Me Dead" was released by P-R-C according to the screen credits, but it was probably one of the studio's final movies. Eagle-Lion wound up being purchased by United Artists. |
