Can't find it now but I saw a video on Instagram yesterday of a bloke wandering round a predominantly Islamic area of London and asking random people where to go to get Jihadi training and they were all telling him to go to the mosques in the area. He then approached people whilst pretending to be pro Hamas and pro Isis and urging them to get involved in Jihad and furthering the implementation of Sharia law in the UK to which they all enthusiastically agreed. There were loads of people he spoke to who were in total agreement with that.

That's exactly my point. Neither the video I refer to or Sheff's above really mean anything as they are both likely to be biased and both have such a small sample as to basically be meaningless.

Well I can tell you that's not correct about SVC. They have a property near me in which they temporarily house people. In the last 3 years,5 families have lived there and 4 were immigrants who were then were allocated actual houses. All were very nice people but that's just one property in the town and I'm sure there are similar stories. So Mr Union Jack suit is ill informed

              Probably, which is the problem.

All the time people form strong opinions without spending just a bit of time trying to verify the veracity of them we can never hold politicians properly to account.

As an aside it is one of the reasons that AI should concern everyone.

Wrong that figure is for London. The national figure is 19.2%

Of you London figure half of that 46% are UK passport holders.

I would point you towards sources but you wouldn't read or heed them.

                      That's interesting.
According to Gov.uk out of a total 3.916M social housing homes in the UK 2.876M were occupied by tenants of white British ethnicity, and the latest data for 2024/25 shows the lead tenants of social housing over this period for new lets were 89% UK nationals.

You might be, but as ever with this topic while I agree it is a significant problem, and I mean significant, it is simply not the most serious or impactful one we face.

And the suggestions that this government are "doing nothing about it" are farcical.

                                          It’s certainly up there imo.

The cost ( which we simply can’t afford ) , the crime stats compared to British people are off the charts and the amount of time/ cost the Government are having to spend trying to sort is very significant.

TBH if there was no immigration there would only be a minor improvement in the cost and other impacts. The issue is that the problems are exaggerated to suggest that all of the problems are because of immigration, which is rubbish. We need a more rational debate. Not scapegoating.

Housing , welfare , schooling , healthcare etc etc . If it’s 5% of our wealthcare spend then it’s £16b and in the rest and it’s a sizeable number.

On the other hand the tax gap is £59b. Most of that is the very rich not paying what they owe. That is what I call significant compared to the figures you quote. If you really want to fix the problem that’s where you need to start. Why not scapegoat tax dodgers? You really need to look at this rationally rather than blaming the wrong people.

Zero evidence but even if it’s correct ( and if it is why aren’t the 60k employed by HMRC doing their fucking job ) they are stating 5% is from the wealthy !!
                                                  So if but and maybe .. it’s 5% if 59b ..

Suggest you read the report again. So tax dodging is okay? Closing half of the tax gap would almost balance the budget. People don’t pay what they owe. Collecting this money would help the economy far more. But you’d rather focus on something that would make far less difference.

Re: The people of Stevenage speak

I don’t need to read the report again.

Firstly it’s an estimate that HMRC think the country should be producing in tax revenue that they aren’t getting . Don’t see anywhere in the report the evidence they have to back it up so hardly definitive.

Secondly let me remind you what you wrote “ Most of that is the very rich not paying what they owe.“

The report alleges ( can’t be bothered to look again ) but from memory @ 5% of the “uncollected “ tax is from the wealthy.
So no proof and even the revenues estimate is 5% of a made up figure of 59b.

5 wealthy people got prosecuted for tax evasion last year…agree shouldn’t be any and without doubt some are getting away but if you think that fixes the problems of this country then you are very mistaken. Getting the wealthy to stay as Burnham said yesterday is much more important.

Finally my cost estimate on ileagal immigration was purely welthfare and almost certainly underestimated. If you add in all the other costs associated it’s probably double that.

So your immigration figure is only an estimate but that’s more accurate than the HMRC on tax 🤣. You really should read the bit on corporation tax which is the biggest area of increase. There is a nice chart to go with it. On the immigration figure you also have to look at the income contributed in tax and working in places like the care sector. Then you need to take that off your alleged costs. It really says everything about you that you don’t see the problem of dodging tax but query the welfare budget.

Re: The people of Stevenage speak

We have figures for the amount of immigrants claiming benefits my estimate was including costs associated with ileagals ..border force etc, etc.I am sure those costs could be found but just about to head to the airport so don’t have time.

The HMRC figures are a total guess…you have now switched from the wealthy to corporates as you original point was proven to be crap.

It says a lot about you that you can’t see our welthfare budget is increasing every minute and putting the country further in debt. Reeves increase in ni contributions has increased the problems but you just want to shout it’s “ unfair all those rich people don’t pay enough tax “ when in fact 1% of us pay a third of the total.

Those 5 people who were prosecuted last year will make all the difference…..

That’s right your estimates are tight and HMRC are totally made up. How people get wealthy includes companies making profits but deliberately not paying what they owe. The level of tax owed means collecting half the tax gap is far more than cutting the welfare budget the vast majority that need it. I’m against anyone defrauding either welfare or tax. You prefer to support the tax dodgers. Why aren’t you complaining about only 5 people being prosecuted as much as you are about immigration or welfare? You do realise there are many more under investigation and the problem is much bigger than that. Even using your wired logic at least both are bad? But you’d rather focus on what another poster describes as blinkered bullshit.

Re: The people of Stevenage speak

My point is the issue of the tax gap and the amount of money being lost. It is huge compared to the amount you estimated for immigration. That is what the debate was about. You bought up the number 5 and suggested there wasn’t a problem. It’s much bigger than that. I think there should be more prosecutions. An awful lot of people settle when they should actually be prosecuted. That is just as bad. But you’d rather deflect by going on about illegal immigration. Actually, in past years the estimate has proven highly accurate to the final confirmed figure (as you said to me, Google it).The final figure for 25/26 will be announced and we’ll see how inaccurate it is.

Re: The people of Stevenage speak

You think there should be more prosecutions based on what …let me help you …you are a leftie who wants rich people to pay more so you don’t have too.

Maybe join the 60k at HMRC and you can show them how to prosecute more wealthy people who you know are fiddling the country. Maybe get the number to 7 prosecutions.

All I have said is the tax gap is much bigger than the amounts you are talking about. They should tackle the tax gap, that should be a top priority. That money means better services for people and an improved economy. We’ll see how accurate the current tax gap figures are when they are finalised. You can apologise then. Wealth inequality will never go away until governments around the world unite in a taxation system which is never going to happen.

Climate crisis again is something the UK can do very little about worldwide and we are one of the world’s leaders in what we have done. Spending billions of pounds to move our dial a little further when in reality it makes no difference to the planet makes no sense when we have a welfare state that eats more than our tax revenues.

Use that money on our nhs, police , roads etc…make our country a better place.

                                                        What a feeble approach.

Mate, if you don't fix those two things, especially the climate crisis none of what you are talking about is ever going to get fixed.

And by the way, when you challenge Net Zero, and the grid upgrades . . . check out how old the average transformer is in the national grid and imagine how much energy they are are wasting constantly . . . it's shocking if you haven't seen it before.

Re: The People Of Stevenage Speak . . .

It’s reality ..how do you suggest fixing the problems you list as the most important?

I am sure as are thousands of other things that need changing and improving…but until we fix our finances then they aren’t getting done.

Eg:It’s ridiculous we have a water shortage in the country but it’s because we have 10m more people living here and things like data centres without building anymore reservoirs for 35 years.

Re: The People Of Stevenage Speak . . .

No, reality is, if we don't fix them then the things that you are talking about don't get fixed either.

And you try to justify the fact that it's Net Zero that's "bankrupting" us, I'd tell you that you can't but go look for yourself.

And I totally agree with you about water and data centres and so on even if I do live right near a reservoir that is actually being built!

But if you don't think being leaders in green tech and having energy security and being able to help lead global climate efforts is a thing worth doing . . . because if we can't fix it then all of the things you are talking about won't matter. That is the reality. It's biggest challenge our species has ever faced and you want to just shrug your shoulders and torpedo a few dinghies (I know, it's for dramatic effect only at the end there, don't take that bit seriously 😁.

Re: The People Of Stevenage Speak . . .

That’s because people have not taken the climate crisis seriously and some suggest it doesn’t exist at all. Instead they blame immigration. As I’ve said if there was no immigration there would still be a water shortage. Just easier to scapegoat them for drinking.

Re: The People Of Stevenage Speak . . .

Ther should be a "which normally follow quiet quickly" just before "are farcical".

Not suggesting Andy was doing that at this point.
