Syd Owen World Cup 1954

Nice picture of Syd Owen walking out to play for England against Belgium at the 1954 World Cup.
It's the only time a Luton player has played for England at the World Cup but would also be Syd's last cap. He was injured during the game and Billy Wright had to move to centre half where he stayed for the rest of his England career.
The match finished 4-4 and was the first England game to go to extra time.

🧡outlaws is not the barometer of sanity. You're either Luton full tilt or you are nothing. We have spunked way too much money on shite. The end.
Hadn’t realised that the group matches in the 1954 World Cup had extra time, so Syd (having been injured in between the 45 and 50 minute) would have had to hobble about for another 40+ mins. He then (according to the “team notes” on the England Football Online website) “went off for a spell with a leg injury and resumed at outside left.”
Before the days of substitutions I presume a player was allowed to go off and then come back on again ?

As long as a sub hasn't been used, they still can. Against York in 2015, we had used all of our subs when Nathan Doyle got injured and went off leaving us with ten men. Steve McNulty then got sent off so Doyle came back on so that we didn't go down to nine men.
In that game, we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and maintain our record of never losing a game refereed by Charlie Breakspear. That record still stands (eight wins and six draws in fourteen games, I believe) - we also came back from 2-0 down at Coventry in 2018 on a Tuesday night when he was refereeing.
