This is turning out to be a great world cup

Rather than the smaller nations being whipping boys, many of them actually not just competing, but getting results over more established football nations. Morocco holding Brazil, Cape Verde drawing against Spain, Egypt getting a point off Belgium and, as I write this Saudi Arabia have just taken the lead against Uruguay!
And from what I've seen it's been attacking football in the main too.
Just hope we can do the business against Croatia on Wednesday evening. Live justly, love mercy, perpetuate generosity, walk humbly.
First round of games are quite watchable, everyone gets about how good the matches are, then as the tournament progresses and the jeopardy increases the games get steadily worse.
I agree it’s enjoyable but just some context Morocco are 7th in world rankings and Brazil 6th…so they are hardly whipping boys.
Just seen a stat which shows Spain have made 2500 passes since their last World Cup goal. Good hope the tippy tappy shit disappears from our game…it’s fucking dull!!
Totally agree with your last paragraph. There's definitely times and occasions for keeping possession but when it's used excessively and at the expense of a probing through ball or a dribble trying to take on a defender then I have no sympathy at all.Live justly, love mercy, perpetuate generosity, walk humbly.
I take my hat off to both Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They've both improved so much it's actually really impressive. The Saudi keeper is having an absolute blinder tonight. Egypt and Morocco have been on an upward trajectory for a while now but they also deserve credit for their performances too. Overall I am impressed with the way they have all markedly improved.outlaws is not the barometer of sanity. You're either Luton full tilt or you are nothing. We have spunked way too much money on shite. The end.
The format means that, despite a few shock results, it is highly unlikely that any "big" teams will be eliminated in the group stages so it will take two and a half weeks to eliminate the worst team in each group and a third of the worst but one teams.
It will be even worse in 2030 if they add another 16 teams.
Yes, but as you allude to, that is down to the format of the competition and not necessarily directly because of the sheer number of nations involved. Live justly, love mercy, perpetuate generosity, walk humbly.
But the format is what it is due to the number of teams.
In one way, you could argue that 64 teams is better than 48 as you can have 16 groups of four with the top two in each going through but there would be so many "dead rubbers" in groups of four where only two are going through.
The problem is that the group stages would take so long with 64 especially as 2030 has the added complication of three games being played in South America. There will be six teams who are probably going to need the best part of a fortnight to acclimatise once they eventually get to Europe.
To be fair, it is not necessary for all the games to be separated in the early rounds, as they are just now. So it shouldn't affect the length of the competition. I didn't know about South America games, but there must be a way around it. The fact is, opening up the WC to smaller or less established national teams is good for the growth of the game in general. Imagine if the first FA Cup was only PL teams and stayed that way for almost a hundred years. Then suddenly, Luton (and others, obviously) were allowed to enter every year . Would we say it was a bad thing?
Of course if every game ended 1-1.........👽I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end...
2030 is the centenary of the first tournament in Uruguay so there wiĺl be games in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. It would put the teams at a massive disadvantage if they had to just turn up in Morocco, Portugal and Spain and play their next games.
