Changes to the laws of the game.

FIFA are introducing some changes to the laws of our beloved game!!
The changes are mainly addressing time wasting.

    They're explained in this video

2 major changes I'd like to see but will probably never happen

1st one has been mentioned before, a ball in play clock instead of the 90 minutes. It can probably only be implemented at professional level as it needs a dedicated official. In theory time wasting is stopped straight away.

2nd one is to change the penalty distance, or have 2 different penalty spots. Too many penalties are awarded nowadays. A penalty is converted roughly 80% of the time, so it's a massive reward for a foul where there may not be a clear goal scoring opportunity such as a handball by a defender blocking a cross near to the winger on the byline. You could move the penalty spot back 3 or 4 yards so the penalty conversion rate goes down. Or have 2 spots, one for a clear denial of goalscoring opportunity at 12 yards, and one near or on the edge of the box for the less severe fouls.

Or, you could even shrink the penalty box from 18 yards to 12 yards.

Won't someone please think of Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage Borough and Gareth Ainsworth??

Why make it so complicated, wouldn't it be easier to just stop the clock, players can roll around pretending to be injured as much as they want and would be pointless delaying free kicks, goal kicks, corners, throw ins, goal celebrations, substitutions etc.

He suggest that the eight second law has worked because the number of corners has been minimal - I would suggest that it hasn't worked because referees don't even start counting down until after about eight seconds and then count down at about half speed. Introducing an eight second law because the six second law wasn't being implemented makes no sense - why not just actually implement the existing law.

When a goalkeeper goes down injured the opposing captain should be able to nominate which player goes off instead of the keeper.

When a player goes down injured, players shouldn't be allowed to go over to the dugouts.

A player who is in the middle of the field will struggle to get off in ten seconds. Even more so, in the case of an injured player. In a case of multiple substitutions, the fourth official often wastes more time than the players putting the details into the board.

It's not clear from that, how long the referee will wait before starting the countdown on goal kicks and throw ins - this will lead to a lot of inconsistency.

Using a "ball in play" timer would eliminate a lot of these issues.

For me, a more important issue to look at is fouling at corners. This should be clamped down on. It was threatened that this would happen before but it never happened (except for Scott Cuthbert v Blackpool and Teden Mengi v Everton).

Using a ball in play timer, would mean Wycombe would have to kick off at 1pm to finish at 5pm

It wouldn't as there would no longer be any point wasting time.

10 seconds for subs. 5 seconds for throw ins. That feels too short to me. 1 minute for players who are genuinely injured also feels harsh.

Of course the 8 second rule hasn’t been enforced at all this season.

These all seem ok except for the mission creep with VAR. When they introduced VAR they said it would only be for a few things and now a couple of years down the line they're already going to use it for extra things. I preferred football when VAR wasn't a thing and I think most fans agree, but the authorities seem to think they know better. That's wrong of them.

Agree, VAR has ruined the game for those in the stadium.

But since when did the authorities hive a fuck about the fans, its all about the TV money ain't it.

Yes, I was definitely in the minority when it was introduced thinking it was a good thing. I still think it should be a positive thing but its implementation is all wrong. It should have been for clear and obvious errors not someone's sodding toenail being offside. It won't go back to having limited input now so it needs to be binned.

Cricket has pretty much got it right where teams have a very small number of reviews available and it is up to the captain not the umpire to decide when they are used.

On occasions it actually adds to the drama in cricket.

Though most of the time it's just a pain in the arse, and has led to umpires not making decisions because they know there's a safety net.

Defenders stand like statues with their arms behind their backs for fear of giving away a penalty. Penalties should only be given for deliberate handball.
