What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Posted by Sandgrounder on 1/5/2026, 12:40:34
I’ll be disappointed (and obviously the season would have to go down as a failure), but it’ll appear fairly low on my overall ‘list of Luton disappointments’ scale. It’s more likely than not that we’ll miss out and it’s not in our hands. We’ve done well to take it this far given the utter shit show up until Feb and there are signs that Wilshere is starting to get what’s required.
I’d feel cautiously optimistic about next season. There will be huge squad churn and we’ll almost certainly lose some players we want to keep and not be able to offload everyone that we don’t want. But the sides coming down are nothing to fear and we should be better and more consistent next year. The tanker is starting to turn I reckon.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Too much of the season was boring. Driving several hours to watch 0 or 1 shot really makes you question your sanity. This is a hobby, a choice, my entertainment escape. Thankfully we have found something, I hope it can continue for a week or 2 more.
The truth is simple. If it was complicated, everyone would understand it.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
I pretty well gave up on the season weeks ago because we had been so fucking shite. I've enjoyed going far more since I took that stance.
It's just football really and it doesn't mean as much to me as it did. I just see it as a reason to spend a day with my eldest lad/mates, and have a few beers.
In short I think I will live.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Yep, plenty more things in life to worry about. The way I see it now is that what happens will happen becasue there is nothing we can do about it anyway.
The recent improvement in form does give us hope, and fingers crossed it carries on into next year. It will be hard becasue the squad will lose players and bring new players in which means they will have to gel again which we can only hope goes well.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
They’ll have to gel again, but at least Wilshere has shown he can gel a squad which had been dysfunctional for a long time. Hopefully, knitting this summer’s squad will be relatively easy now he’s made this one harmonious.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
I'll be feeling that, for the 2nd year running, it is an inexcusable failure. If we make the play-offs and lose, I'll be thinking the same. To be so far off the auto promotion pace with the financial advantage we had is failure in itself. Nothing redeems this season except promotion now.
There is longer term hope in that Wilshere looks like he knows what he's doing and what he wants. But getting the type of players he wants is going to be very difficult, especially if we stay down. I just hope Wilshere and Powell take total charge of recruitment as that will give me hope. If that happens, I'd be optimistic that we'll be fine if we do go up and that we'll be contending for autos if we stay down
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Agreed, inexcusable failure. For the 2nd season in a row. However not making the playoffs won't be down to tomorrow, its down to the shit show of a season as a whole. From the recruitment (Palmer aside) to the awful performances both as a team and as individuals.
Sweet and the board said play-offs as a minimum is the bar set of the season. And with our finances we should be top 2 really.
Wilshere has started to get a tune out of this lot, however he made lots of mistakes early in his tenure, so the recent good form may prove to be too little too late.League one again ole ole
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
I've been critical of the the recruitment but they have got some right, Odoffin, Lawrence, Richards, Shady Mo and Bramal to an extent. Agree it will be a failure but I think that's due to the wrong manager at the wrong time. Obviously it's the board who appointed the PE teacher.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Agreed the majority of those you mention have been Ok. Morris is a one trick pony but when he can out pace his man and cross he's effective. But for all of those ,there's Nordas, Makosso, Cole, Sandal, VBD, Al Hamidi, Jacob Brown, maybe even Alli if he's a bad egg (in which case why sign him).
All of that aside im looking forward to tomorrow, hopefully we can pull it off. League one again ole ole
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Depends how we play tomorrow, to an extent. If we play as we have been recently but other results don’t go in our favour, fair enough. So long as we don’t turn in another West Brom performance (and there’s nothing to suggest we will), then at least we’ve got an excellent manager. As others have said, there’ll be a lot of squad churn. But we’re likely to be left with a promising side, whatever happens. And we know from the Meet The Manager event that Palmer and Lawrence were Wilshere-led signings. If he can be in charge of recruitment, that’s promising too. But, as Farhat posted below, it’ll be interesting to see what the off the field changes hinted at in the Barnsley programme will be. It’s good the club recognises changes need to happen. Let’s see what they are.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
As long as they put a shift in I’ll be philosophical. I don’t agree that we’d come straight back down if we went up. I also don’t think our current form will automatically role into next season if we don’t go up.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
I agree on both counts. We'll be fine in the C'ship if we go up. 12th - 16th sort of area
If we stay down, as you say, there is absolutely no reason to automatically think that our good form will roll into next season. There will be a high turnover of playing staff so not sure why people are so confident our current run will spill over into August
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
I think that’s optimistic as to how we’d do in the championship. In recent seasons Derby, Oxford, Portsmouth and Charlton have all been fighting relegation, though derby kicked on this year. Wrexham and Birmingham the exceptions for obvious reasons.
I agree that we’re not guaranteed to pick up where we left off next season, cautious optimism more to do with the impact the management team have (eventually) had this season, getting a settled style of play, some promising recruitment. I think all that can carry over even if the squad changes a fair bit.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Derby were recovering from financial difficulties. The others had spent a long time out of the top 2 divisions so acclimatisation might have been an issue. We'd have only been absent for a year so it won't be a culture shock and we should know what's required (despite last year's utter shambles). Also, from the little 2nd division football I've seen, I don't think the C'ship has been that great this season
I'd be more optimistic of staying up in Div 2 than going up from Div 3
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
I think we went up this season we’d do a lot better in the championship than some people think. Wilshere knows what he’s doing, and the championship suits his style a lot more than L1
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Back in September, Sweet said of this term’s third tier campaign: “Success for us, as an absolute minimum, is play offs. But our desire is to get automatic promotion and that’s our target.”
I’m with Sweet on this one. Anything less is a failure. And when we kick off tomorrow it won’t even be in our own hands.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
It would be the 3rd successive year of failure. I'll be disappointed but not surprised.
If we don't go up, Sweet, the recruitment team and anyone else that been involved with blowing all the money should be lined up and kicked really, really hard in the bollocks. That'll learn 'em.
Re: What will be the overall feeling if we miss out on top 6 tomorrow?
Tbh, it's absolutely disgusting that we sit below them after 45 games in the 3rd division given all the riches we've been handed.
But, as usual, I'll be getting behind the players tomorrow with a small bit of hope that Kasey Palmer can drag a little bit of happiness out of what has been, for the most part, another dogshit season.
