On this day

Firstly, thanks to all those that took part in the poll yesterday, as it’s good to know others are reading and interested in my daily messages. Whether the outcome reflects the cohort of supporters who read the website I’ll leave others to judge, but it is interesting to note that the Newcastle game had nearly twice as many votes as the Oxford game.
A special match took place for many of us 25 years ago today, with it being the first match that Joe Kinnear took charge of the team. Appointed 2 days earlier the team went to Northampton and won 1-0 with a goal from Stuart Douglas.
5 players have been born on this day, with the first being Harry Crump in 1873. The other 4 players are Alan McBain (born 1940), Trevor Peake (born 1957), Arnaud Mandy (born 1990) and finally Lasse Nordas (born 2002). Doubtful that Lasse reads this message board, but happy 24th birthday to you anyway.
4 players have made their debut for us on this day, with the first being W Toyer in a 4-0 defeat at Millwall in 1913. It also turned out to be his only first team game for the club. The next player to make his debut was not until 60 years later, when Derek Hales played in a 2-0 away defeat against Brighton in 1973. The other 2 players to make their debuts on this day were Richard Dryden & Keith Rowland in the aforementioned match at Northampton in 2001.

Ah, the defeat to Sheffield United in the PL. Looking back that is where it started to all go pear-shaped. IIRC we'd just thrashed Brighton and drawn with Newcastle, before proceeding to lose at home to one of the worst PL teams in memory. Think we only won one more game in that season!

The thing that a lot of our supporters forget is that our slow decline started well after the transfer window shut. Nobody could foresee the injuries we'd get, particularly in defence.

Yes, very odd game and atmosphere that afternoon. We expected to turn up and win that day, probably for the 1st time all season. They were set up to just sit back let us have the ball and see what we could do, the answer was nothing.
IIRC they nearly scored after 5 seconds, set the mood for the whole day.Don't feed the trolls

The photo of William Toyer comes from this photo of Luton Clarence 1910/11. Clarence were a fantastic club and contributed many players to LTFC. Most of these players played in the first team or reserves.
The cups are The Ascot Football League Cup, the Bedford Football League Cup and the Bedfordshire County Senior Cup. Their grounds were next to Popes Meadow, opposite Wardown Park before the traffic lights. Then later, in the fields behind the Jolly Topers, where Felix Avenue is now.
Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885

No mention there of the 1988 League Cup semi final first leg I note - best remembered for a cracking bit of cheating by Dean Saunders, Les Sealey saving a penalty and toilets that were ankle deep in piss….
Hard to believe that Northampton game was 25yrs ago. I remember it well - I’d managed to get a ticket via a Cobblers supporting mate of mine, 3 minutes in we go 1-0 up and I couldn’t keep a lid on it - as did many others in the home section. At half time a load of us were all moved into the stand to the right of where the Luton fans were sat and where I had the perfect view of Matthew Spring rattling the crossbar from the penalty spot.
I’ve one other memory of that day and that’s the ersatz bus service that was running instead of the trains between Bletchley and Euston. I’d had a skinful and remember having drifted off I woke up - still on the bus obviously - in a cul-de-sac on a Bletchley and the driver couldn’t reverse out resulting in someone being asked to move their car. All because the driver had accepted instructions from another passenger of a ‘better route’…..

You are right CJ I should have highlighted/commented on that match as well. My recollection is as much about driving across The Chilterns in the snow before the game and wondering if it would be called off, as the match itself. Given the conditions a draw was felt to be a good result even if the game itself was uneventful.

Interesting post as always, thank you.
One other person who deserves a mention is Dr EJ Crarer who was born on this day in 1898.
He was club doctor for over 30 years and also instrumental in the opening of the Luton and Dunstable hospital.
